Take a look at some of my Freelance UI animation work:

UI animation for Tempest Rising - GDF Faction

Tempest Rising is a modern RTS game developed by Slipgate Ironworks.

Initially my role in the project was to develop the UI animations to help transition the game menus and elements on-screen. This role quickly expanded to include creating updated map screens, cinematics, and a whole array of other UI motion design elements within the game.

The work you see here is specifcally for one faction within the game: The GDF (Global Defence Force) - a high-tech peacekeeping force. The high-tech nature of the faction inspired the intricate visuals and more futuristic look, especially when compared to the more retro low-tech graphics of the Tempest Dynasty.

UI Motion Design for Tempest Rising - DYN Faction

As part of my role developing the UI motion design for Tempest Rising, I was tasked with creating an alternative UI motion style for the second faction within the game: The Tempest Dynasty.

In the game's backstory, the Dynasty faction was born out of the countries that were hardest hit in the global nuclear war. As a result, the Dynasty faction doesn't have access to the same high-tech resources as the GDF faction.

Using this backstory and building on some initial style points I put together this legacy UI style that took inspiration from old computer interfaces and MS DOS style designs.

The end result works really well within the game for distinguishing the two factions and adding to the backstory of the faction using whatever legacy / retro tech they can get their hands on.

Animated sci-fi trailer for the Galactic project

The Galactic sci-fi UI template is my latest project for Made by Loop, and one I've genuinely loved working on from start to finish.

Perhaps my favourite part of the process was creating the trailer in After Effects to help showcase and advertise the key features of the template. The screen mockup and visuals I created for the trailer ended up being fed back into the template itself to help others design their own visuals.

Editing the template visuals to a pretty epic audio track was also a lot of fun, as was trying to create a photorealistic style within After Effects - it really makes you think about the composition of things, light, and how things would look "in the real world".

Animated sci-fi trailer for the Chronos template

Chronos is my latest project for Made by Loop and perhaps the most ambitious project I've worked on to date.

As a motion designer and sci-fi fan, I'm always fascinated by on-screen graphics and interfaces. Creating the Chronos pack, I was able to experiment and create a sci-fi interface of my own, while also creating something others could use too.

I set out with the goal of creating something intricate; something with a lot of moving parts and components. The final template has over 400 elements and pre-designed compositions which, when layered together, can create some wonderful effects.

Creating the trailer was also a lot of fun, it gave me the opportunity to learn and experiment with new techniques in After Effects. The whole style of the pack is quite different to my most recent projects, so it's been great to shake things up a bit and try something new!

Head over to Made by Loop for more information on the
Chronos Sci-fi template.

Why do you need fictional UI animation?

UI animation and screen graphics are one of the best ways to set the tone of a fictional world. Take the GDF and Dynasty examples above, these are both part of the same project but they are so different because they represent and reinforce the core differences of the two factions within the game: one is high-tech, the other isn't.

Rewilding the planet with freelance animation and motion design

We've only got one planet, and right now it needs all the help it can get. Climate change and biodiversity loss are massive challenges that we need to tackle head on.

That's why, for every freelance animation project over £1000 a donation of 1% of the total budget will be made to the World Land Trust, on your behalf.

The money will go towards WLT's "buy an acre" programme; buying up and protecting vital habitats around the world, and helping fight against climate change.

Any motion design projects under £1000 will have a tree planted on your behalf.

Acres saved so far:

Thanks to my wonderful clients and the animations we've produced, enough money has been donated to save around:

17.5 Acres of vital habitats around the world.

Just think, your animated explainer video or logo animation could also be helping fight the climate crisis!
