About me
Hi there! As you may have guessed my name is Thomas, I'm a website designer & developer currently based in sunny Manchester. When I'm not busy designing websites I'm usually creating motion graphics & web videos.
I specialise in Drupal theme & module development - Drupal provides a great foundation on which to build all sorts of websites; from a simple blog or website a client can update themselves to an entire social network! Although I am predominantly a Drupal developer I also use other platforms such as Wordpress or Tumblr for creating blogs and smaller sites.
About a year ago I created GotBrief - an online community to help inspire creative people by providing a weekly one word brief to focus on. GotBrief also provides me with a way of exploring my interest in graphic design too - I like to create a new piece of work for the launch of each brief.
Work
2010 - 2011 FreshNetworks
Whilst at FreshNetworks I was part of the development team responsible for the building and maintenance of large scale online communities & social applications.
Some of the projects I was involved with include:
- T.M.Lewin Community
- RS Components DesignSpark Community
- JimmyChoo - Choo connection
- LV Community
- ParkBench & Scratching post Facebook applications
- 007 Carte Blanche Facebook page & applications
The sites above were all built using Drupal however we also used other platforms such as WordPress to create blogs like OurWarner.
Education
I studied at Lancaster University achieving a First Class MSci in I.T. & Media Communications.
My degree course covered a wide variety of topics ranging from the engineering principles of communication systems right up to the production of 3D graphics.
My favourite area of study was definitely to do with mobile communications: the structure of modern mobile networks and potential future of mobile technology. I also really enjoyed experimenting with new technology like RFID - seeing how it could be used to connect offline objects with online actions to create "the internet of things".
Side projects
As I mentioned previously, although I specialise in Drupal I also like to experiment with other platforms & enjoy taking on little side projects in my spare time to learn more about them. My most recent side projects include:
- Paused TV Faces - a fun side project experimenting with the features of Tumblr.
- GrammarTime - a web app built using Vanilla JavaScript
- Who's tweeting the most? - a web app to explore the Twitter API
A little bit more:
I'm also a Coeliac and have been since I was about 18 months old (it basically means I cannot eat anything containing Gluten) - if you'd like to know a bit more then take a look at the official Coeliac UK site.
